What personal data we collect and why

Comments

When visitors leave comments on the site we collect the data shown in the comments form, plus the visitor’s IP address and browser user-agent string to help with spam detection. An anonymized hash of your email address may be sent to the Gravatar service to check whether you have an account; the Gravatar service privacy policy is at https://automattic.com/privacy/. After your comment is approved, your profile picture is visible to the public in the context of your comment.

Contact forms

This site does not currently use a contact form. If you reach out by email, that email is stored in our mail provider’s inbox and is only used to respond to you.

Cookies

If you leave a comment, you may opt in to saving your name, email, and website in cookies so you don’t have to fill those fields again next time. These cookies last one year.

If you log in to the site (admin only), a temporary login cookie is set, and a longer-lived cookie persists your login session for up to two weeks if you choose “Remember Me.”

Third-party advertising cookies may be set by Google AdSense (see Embedded content and advertising below) when ads are enabled on the site.

Embedded content and advertising

Articles on this site may include embedded content (videos, images, articles, etc.) from other websites. Embedded content from other websites behaves in exactly the same way as if the visitor visited that website directly. Those sites may collect data about you, use cookies, embed additional third-party tracking, and monitor your interaction with the embedded content.

This site may also display advertising via Google AdSense. Google may use cookies to serve ads based on your prior visits to this site or other sites. You can opt out of personalized advertising by visiting Google Ads Settings. More information about how Google uses data is at https://policies.google.com/technologies/partner-sites.

Analytics

This site uses Google Site Kit, which integrates Google Search Console and (optionally) Google Analytics for traffic measurement. Aggregate visit data — page views, referrers, approximate geography — is sent to Google. Google’s privacy policy is at https://policies.google.com/privacy.

Who we share your data with

We do not sell or rent personal data. The only third parties that receive any data tied to your visit are:

  • The hosting provider (GoDaddy), which receives server-level request logs (IP, request path, user-agent) in the normal course of serving pages.
  • Google (Search Console, Analytics if enabled, AdSense if ads are enabled), as described above.
  • Automattic / Gravatar, if you leave a comment with an email address.
  • Spam filter services (e.g. Akismet, if active), which receive comment data to evaluate it as spam.

How long we retain your data

Comments and their metadata are retained indefinitely so that follow-up comments can be recognized and approved automatically rather than held in a moderation queue. If you have an account on this site (admin only), the personal information you provide in your profile is retained until your account is deleted. Site administrators can view, edit, and delete that information.

What rights you have over your data

If you have left comments or have an account on this site, you can request to receive an exported file of the personal data we hold about you, including any data you provided. You can also request that we erase any personal data we hold about you. This does not include any data we are obliged to keep for administrative, legal, or security purposes. To make either request, contact the email address above.

Where your data is sent

Visitor comments may be checked through an automated spam detection service. Data sent to Google (analytics, ad serving) may be processed in the United States and other jurisdictions where Google operates.

How we protect your data

This site enforces HTTPS for all traffic. The administrator account is protected by two-factor authentication and a strong unique password. The site runs the Sucuri Security plugin for monitoring and alerting on integrity changes. The host (GoDaddy) provides server-level patching and backup.

Data breach procedures

If we become aware of a data breach affecting personal data on this site, affected individuals will be notified by the email they provided, and a public notice will be posted on this site, within 72 hours of confirmation. Any required reporting to regulatory authorities (e.g. under GDPR Article 33) will be performed in parallel.

Third parties we receive data from

We do not import third-party data about visitors. The only inbound data flow from external sources is server-level traffic data delivered by the hosting provider for operational visibility.

Automated decision making and profiling

This site does not perform automated decision making or profiling on visitor data. Advertising shown by Google AdSense (when enabled) is selected by Google’s ad systems based on signals Google has — we do not configure or receive that profile data.

Industry-specific regulatory disclosures

None. This site is a personal blog and does not operate in a regulated industry vertical (healthcare, finance, education, etc.).
